A PSA nitrogen generator separates nitrogen from compressed air using carbon molecular sieve (CMS). Two towers alternate between adsorption (N₂ captured at pressure) and regeneration (pressure release), giving continuous on-site N₂ at 95%–99.999% purity. Feed air must be oil-free with dew point ≤ -40°C.

How PSA Nitrogen Generation Works
Compressed air passes through a vessel filled with carbon molecular sieve (CMS). Oxygen molecules diffuse into the micropores faster than nitrogen, so at pressure the sieve retains O₂ while N₂ passes through as product gas. When the bed approaches saturation, the vessel depressurizes and the captured oxygen is vented — this is the regeneration step. A second tower is producing meanwhile, so output is continuous.
Two parameters dominate design: purity (higher purity = more air consumed per Nm³) and flow. A 99.5% system typically needs roughly double the feed-air flow of a 99% system at the same output.

Sizing: Flow, Pressure and Air Quality
- Continuous demand (Nm³/h): size to average consumption, not peak. Oversizing wastes energy on purge cycles.
- Outlet pressure: typically 0.1–0.6 MPa. Every 0.1 MPa above need increases power.
- Feed-air quality: oil-free compressor, dew point ≤ -40°C, filtration to 0.01 µm protects CMS life.
- Backup: a small liquid-N₂ evaporator covers maintenance windows if uptime is critical.
What maintenance does a PSA nitrogen generator need?
Three routine items: replace the air filters on schedule, check the oxygen analyzer calibration, and verify the CMS bed condition after roughly 3–5 years of continuous duty. Consumables are filters and valve seals — no nitrogen is consumed.
Can a PSA unit reach 99.999% purity?
Yes — at higher purity the achievable flow falls for the same skid size. Confirm purity and flow together; manufacturers quote flow at a stated purity.
How does PSA compare with liquid nitrogen delivery?
PSA has higher upfront cost but lower running cost when demand is steady and continuous. Liquid N₂ suits low-demand, high-purity or intermittent sites. Payback is usually 12–30 months on continuous duty.
